16 paintings inspired by the Earth Charter will be presented in Mexico

The art exhibition entitled "Llanto Verde" (Green Crying) will be exhibited at the Tabasco Planetary 2000 located in the city of Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico for 30 days, from 4 April 2008 onwards. The paintings, employing a wide range of media and styles, are based on the 16 principles of the Earth Charter. It took the artist, Architect Lorena Priego Fonseca, a year to finish the art work, thanks to the support of the Federal Government and the State of Tabasco.

Nowadays, making the link between culture and care for the environment is a difficult task. This is why PROEMAC (Professionals Specialists on Environment) in Mexico is involved in the promotion of this event.

It is also important to mention that despite the fact that the origin of the "Llanto Verde" project was in Tabasco, this is meant to be a traveling exhibition and will be presented in different parts and cities of Mexico and Latin America, some of which have already requested it.

This exhibit is wonderful - and will inspire future artists, educators and sustainability activists calling on the arts to further the Earth Charter agenda. I'm passing the information on to Cornell University's Johnson Museum of Art, in the hope that we can bring it to Ithaca, NY.

This exhibition is also a perfect example of what an emerging global initiative - ARTS AT THE HEART OF A SUSTAINABLE WORLD, similarly framed by the Earth Charter - hopes to encourage and support.

ARTS AT THE HEART is an outgrowth of the U.S. Partnership for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. Its core goal is to increase acknowledgment of, engagement with, and support for artistic efforts to open minds and hearts to the need for cooperation in creating a more sustainable world.

An event in Ithaca, NY in late April will be laying groundwork for this global project, and everyone is welcome. GREENING THE ARTS, a Symposium to Explore a Role for the Arts in Creating a Sustainable World, April 25 & 26, 2008, combines a panel discussion - including Earth Charter USA's Director of Community Initiatives, Jan Roberts - with an Open Space to generate action plans for local/regional (NYS) and global next steps. One of these steps, already in early planning stages, is an international gathering in New York City in March '09, in tandem with the UN Environmental Program's annual meetings.

Within the overall goal, the priority objectives and activities this project takes on will grow out of the NYC and future gatherings. We welcome all questions, visions, and suggestions. Contact Patricia Haines .
