Mission

The mission of the Earth Charter Initiative is to promote the transition to sustainable ways of living and a global society founded on a shared ethical framework that includes respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity, universal human rights, respect for diversity, economic justice, democracy, and a culture of peace.

Franciscan Sisters putting sustainability into practice

The Sisters of St. Francis of Penance, based in Denver, USA, decided to put in practice the principles of sustainability in their lives, by turning their home into an eco-friendly building, giving the general public that visit them an educational opportunity to learn what is sustainable housing.

Their building is called Casa Chiara, and is a reflection of the sisters’ commitment to conserve and sustain resources.  In 2007, the sisters chose to adopt the Earth Charter in its principles for building a just sustainable and peaceful global society.  Now they are putting the Earth Charter principles into action,  not only with the building, but also with a ministry of prayer for peace and for the health and preservation of planet earth and all who live on it.
