Mission

The mission of the Earth Charter Initiative is to promote the transition to sustainable ways of living and a global society founded on a shared ethical framework that includes respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity, universal human rights, respect for diversity, economic justice, democracy, and a culture of peace.

The Earth Charter at the World Social Forum

The Earth Charter will be present at the World Social Forum (WSF), which is celebrated in Belem, Brazil, from 27 January to 1 February, 2009.

Several Earth Charter Affiliates from Brazil have organized a creative event on the framework of this forum, on 29 January. The idea is to bring together people from very different backgrounds and social sectors and let them interact with the audience, in discussing issues concerning current social, cultural, economic and environmental situation.

On 30 January a workshop organized by the Biosphere Ethics Project (BEP) and Brazil’s Local Agenda 21 will be held as part of the WSF. As mentioned by Kathryn Kintzele, Co-Chair of BEP, the link between these initiatives is the Earth Charter, therefore, representatives of the Earth Charter Initiative will participate in this activity to present the Earth Charter.
