In 1997 a national Earth Charter Project was created in Argentina to help generate dialogue about the Earth Charter draft. In 1998 the Earth Charter was discussed during the third Indigenous Peoples, Mother Earth and Spirituality meeting on Education, Traditional Knowledge and Sustainable Practices held in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina. In August the presentation of the Earth Charter Project in Argentina took place in a public forum with the attendance of approximately 250 people. It was organized by the NGOs Acuario XXI Century and Ala Plastica, among other institutions.

During 1998 and 1999 a series of meetings were organized to collect Argentina’s vision of the Earth Charter. Also, representatives from Acuario XXI participated in the Earth Charter Value Training Workshop held in Costa Rica in May 1999.

After the launch of the Earth Charter in 2000 activities in Argentina have slowed down.

Argentina People and Nature is at present using the Earth Charter as the fundamental base for all their projects. They have disseminated the Charter as much as possible within individuals and educational institutions, among others. In fact, they have done a wonderful dissemination job in rural and local schools through the publication of their magazine “Verde y Algo más” (Green and more) and from their Botanical Garden.

For 2009 they have planned a workshop for businesses and the possibility of including the Charter within the official agenda of the province of Cordoba is alive.

A group of teachers and one of our Affiliates decided to structure an Earth Charter Education Group with a wide national range of action.

Mercedes Sosa, famous Latin American singer and Earth Charter Commissioner, passed away on 4 October 2009.

The VI Congreso Iberoamericano de Educación Ambiental took place in San Clemente del Tuyú, Argentina on September 16-19, 2009.

The group Argentina People and Nature has been working with rural and local schools from the botanic garden Dr. Miquel J Culaciati, an oasis in the province of Córdoba.

They have created a program for outdoor education based on the Earth Charter. Support comes from Botanic Gardens Conservation International and a scientific team from the Faculty of Agronomy at the University of Buenos Aires, who are working from a laboratory annexed to the Botanic Garden. The objective is to reforest a fire-damaged area with native tree and shrub species, and to do it in a way that can be replicated in other damaged areas.
