The mission of the Earth Charter Initiative is to promote the transition to sustainable ways of living and a global society founded on a shared ethical framework that includes respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity, universal human rights, respect for diversity, economic justice, democracy, and a culture of peace.

Around the year 2000, the International Institute for Global Ethics made some effort to use and promote the Earth Charter. They were focused on the implementation of “ethics in business” and in that context the institute organized a meeting of the Ethics in Business Council and discussed ways on how the Earth Charter could be implemented. Under this umbrella activity other activities have followed.
 
In the year 2008, an Austrian-based NGO called INEX (International Network of Educational Exchange), started a partnership with the Earth Charter Secretariat in Costa Rica, INEX offers summer university programs to several European universities; one of the programs is a short course on Sustainable Development for Master’s students of different disciplines, which took place in Costa Rica. They started to use the Earth Charter as part of that programme.

From September 12-16th, 2011 representatives from Earth Charter International participated in a workshop to create a youth music contest for Rio+20.
Earth Charter youth network aims to expand in Europe and Central Asia!

The Earth Charter Volunteers Network is bringing about very positive results! An example is the fruitful partnership that the Earth Charter Secretariat is starting with an Austrian-based NGO called INEX (International Network of Educational Exchange).
