German Earth Charter initiatives were in part inspired by the Conference in Assisi, Italy, on “Spirituality and Sustainability” held in July 1997, 1998 and 1999. In November 1999 the Ecumenical One World Initiative (EOWI) organized and EC Workshop in Lauenburg, Northen Germany to discuss the EC Benchmark Draft II. Since then EOWI has been involved in the process of disseminating the EC in Germany, for instance since June 2001, the EOWI has published a quarterly Earth Charter magazine in German. They have also joined forces with BUND to translate and publish Earth Charter brochures in German.

In October 2007, the Ecumenical One world initiative (EOWI) in collaboration with SGI-Germany and two regional educational institutions, organized the first national teacher’s training seminar on the Earth Charter in the country. The seminar highlighted and explored several areas in which the Earth Charter could be used to raise awareness about the values that are inherent in sustainable development.

German GLS bank supports the Earth Charter and especially its activities in Germany through financing the printing of three editions of the German Earth Charter brochure, the Bank's board members hold the strong conviction that the Earth Charter should become the ethical constitution of the emerging world community.

According to its CEO, Mr. Jorberg, the Earth Charter played a crucial role in designing the banks current mission statement, which holds that the bank’s activities are based on the values of respect for life, care for the peaceful coexistence of all cultures and civilizations, as well as individual freedom and responsibility. The bank states that human needs and interests should always be at the center of economic and financial activities, and that human beings can be understood as a unity of body, soul and mind. "There is no other document that captures the philosophy of our institution like the Earth Charter does," said Jorberg. "Indeed, our foremost aim is to use the money we are endowed with to invest in projects that help to realize its vision and values.”

On May 18, the Earth Charter was presented at the children and youth conference of the World Future Council that is holding its second annual meeting from May 18 to 22 in Hamburg, Germany. Aiming to speak out for future generations in the global political arena, the WFC consists of 50 personalities from around the globe, including HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan, Sulak Sivaraksa, co-founder of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists, and Judge C. G. Weeramanty, former Vice President of the International Court of Justice who presented a first draft of his book "Tread Lightly on the Earth. Religion, the Environment and the Human Future".

Having moved into the administrative structures of the Ecumenical One World Initiative (Germany’s Earth Charter Affiliate) the Earth Charter Program on Religion and Sustainability has gained some momentum in Germany:

On December 1st, the Ecumenical One World Initiative (EOWI) in Germany took over the administrative management of the Earth Charter Program on Religion and Sustainability, employing Michael Slaby as Coordinator for ECI's international program. EOWI was founded in 1976 as one of the first Christian ecumenical initiatives that set out to explore sustainable lifestyles in the Western world.

Inaugurated in 1949, the "Kirchentag" occurs every two years, and is the largest Protestant gathering in Germany. In the five day event that took place from June 6 to 10, almost one million people came to Cologne to share in discussions, lectures, prayers, concerts, dancing and singing. The Kirchentag can be described as a large, chaotic, but very cheerful festival of faith and reflection.
