The Green Belt Movement (GBM) and Nobel Peace Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai, have continuously supported the Earth Charter since its drafting process. Mrs. Maathai has been a Member of Earth Charter Commission since 1996. The GBM have translated the Earth Charter not only into local languages (e.g. Kiswahili), but also into practice. Their reforestation and education processes in Kenya are a vivid example of the Earth Charter principles into action.

The GBM have disseminated Earth Charter brochures to more than a thousand organizations in Kenya, to help bring the notions of sustainability to different sectors. In early 2007, Prof. Maathai supported the Billion Tree Planting Campaign initiated by Earth Charter UK, in Oxford. She planted the first tree for this campaign and reinforced her commitment to the principles contained in the Earth Charter.

Many youth groups have been actively involved in the Earth Charter Initiative. In 2002 the UNEP Youth Advisory Council for Kenya disseminated the Earth Charter in all the workshops and conferences that were organized by the Kenya National Youth Committee for the Earth Summit. More recently, Kibera Community Youth Programme (KCYP), a community based organization (CBO) formed and run by young people of Kibera slum, Nairobi, have been using the Earth Charter in their programs.
