The mission of the Earth Charter Initiative is to promote the transition to sustainable ways of living and a global society founded on a shared ethical framework that includes respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity, universal human rights, respect for diversity, economic justice, democracy, and a culture of peace.

In 2007 the Institute for Sustainable Education at the Daugavpils State University, lead by the UNESCO focal point for UN DESD Dr. Ilga Salite, officially became an Earth Charter Initiative Affiliate and included the Earth Charter in their pedagogical curriculum for teachers’ education and life-long professional training. The Institute is famous for being an initiator and organizer of the European Network of Educators for Sustainable Development, the Balkan and Black Sea Circle Consortium (BBCC). The Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development has also become a member of the BBCC, and is cooperating with the network in the educational research and development of new methodologies based on an ethical framework of the Earth Charter. The successful educational experience of the Institute was included in the joint UNESCO-ECI publication within the UN DESD framework, “Good Practices Using the Earth Charter”.
 
In order to further promote the use of the Earth Charter at the Daugavpils State University the Institute established an Earth Charter Center there, which makes it an Earth Charter hub in the region of Eastern Europe.

There is one Earth Charter Youth Group in Latvia, called ECYG Students for Sustainability.


Earth Charter youth network aims to expand in Europe and Central Asia!
An Earth Charter youth activist, e-GLO 1 graduate, Irina Pleva from Latvia lived in Nairobi, Kenya for 6 months. During that time she visited an Earth Charter Youth Group Mathare Roots in Mathare slum and shares her experience here with us.
The Earth Charter International is pleased to announce the creation of several new national Earth Charter websites.
The Earth Charter was well represented in 7th International Conference "Sustainable Development. Culture. Education" in Daugavpils, Latvia, on May 2009.
