In 2000, the Association de Formation et d’Appui au Development (AFAD- Association for the Formation and Support of Development) joined the Earth Charter Initiative. During the same year the association incorporated the Earth Charter into a number of already existing activities and broadly disseminated it throughout the country. They also presented the document to the president of the Republic of Mali as well as to other important public actors. President Amadou Toumani Touré is a member of the Earth Charter Commission.
