Many organizations and individuals from Zimbabwe took part in the drafting process of the Earth Charter since early 1998. During the first half of 1999 the Africa 2000 Network organized and facilitated Earth Charter consultations, as well as three regional workshops to increase national awareness of global Earth Charter process and involve Zimbabwe’s civil society in its formulation. A Network of partnership was created by the Africa 2000 Network, which is a network that includes both national and local government, CBOs, NGOs, academic institutions, professional associations, the private sector, religious and spiritual organizations, cultural entities, women and youth groups, parliamentarians and prominent personalities.

In 2000 the Africa 2000 Network had activities focusing on the promotion of the Earth Charter Initiative among groups in rural areas as well as indigenous people groups.
