Balkan Agency for Sustainable Development (BASD) is an international nongovernmental organization for the promotion of knowledge-based economy, sustainable development, civil society and social inclusion throughout the world. Its’ headquarters is located in Sofia, Bulgaria. BASD is a part of a wide network of non-for-profit and research organizations, regional agencies, governmental and other institutions in all Balkan and European countries, and in Central Asia and Middle East.

In Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Turkey, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, FYROM, Albania, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, and UK BASD cooperates with renowned partners, which guarantees excellent conditions of work and commitment to the results to be achieved. In Slovakia their strategic partner is RDA Senec-Pezinok.

BASD International’s mission is to to foster the well-being of all human beings by promoting sustainable economic development, inter-cultural dialogue, and facilitating access to life long learning, especially in the developing nations of Western Balkans.

BASD works in civil society development, economic growth, the environment, education, social inclusion, and global partnerships in many countries to provide a better future for all.

Having learned about the Earth Charter mission, vision and some of the activities, the Bulgarian headquarters of BASD decided to endorse the Charter and translated the Earth Charter text into the Bulgarian language. They also plan to disseminate the ideas and principles of the Earth Charter in among their stakeholders.
 
Looking at the Earth Charter as a declaration of fundamental ethical principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society in the 21st century, the BASD considers it as a a call to action to make the Balkan region a safer and more sustainable place to live in. The BASD confirms that their vision and mission are in harmony with the Earth Charter values and principles.

As a logical result of this synergy, the BASD management made a decision in November 2009 to become the first Earth Charter Affiliate in Bulgaria and in the Balkan region and become a members of the global Earth Charter community.
