Earth Charter Guiding Leaders Towards Sustainability Action

Earth Charter Guiding Leaders Towards Sustainability Action

“Divorced from ethics, leadership is reduced to management.”
                                                                                              James MacGregor Burns

Reasoning
The problems of today’s world are more complex than ever. They are highly interconnected and interdependent. We face climate change, vast exploitation of natural resources, population growth, growing gap between rich and poor, and social inequity, among many others. To be able to respond to these challenges future leaders need a new and innovative interdisciplinary approach.

Most leaders want to do things that matter, to inspire others to join them and to leave a legacy once they have gone. Consequently more and more leaders begin to question whether the leadership contribution they make is aligned with their highest values.

Therefore there is a need to train the next generation of sustainability leaders. The sustainability approach to leadership requires special competencies compared to traditional leadership; knowledge about the challenges of globalization, capacity for innovation, dialogue and communication skills, systems thinking, global mindset, peer networking ability and strong capacities in Information and Communication technologies (ICTs), to mention few.

Sustainability leadership is seen more as a team endeavor, rather than an individual pursuit. In this process, values are a distinguishing factor – training young professionals is no longer solely about deepening their understanding of sustainability issues – the actual essence is on strengthening values and specific skills.

Objective of e-GLO 2
To make a positive impact on society by familiarizing local level Earth Charter youth activists with sustainability leadership skills and shared ethics. Furthermore, this course will equip them with innovative skills in sustainability project planning, management and fundraising, as well as facilitating the effective use of new media. The ultimate aim is to further develop the capabilities necessary to conduct Earth Charter inspired action projects in the participants’ own communities.

Who can apply?
e-GLO will be offered to youth aged 15 - 33 who are motivated community development project planners and socially conscious artists from around the world. Priority will be given to youth leaders already engaged with the Earth Charter community; however, a few places will be reserved for activists new to the Earth Charter.

Participants will meet online via webcam and mic in e-GLO's own virtual conference environment. The online sessions will happen every second weekend for a period of two hours and will include networking, workshops, interviews with expert guests, cultural performances, participant presentations celebrating local projects and e-GLO collaborative projects, as well as a live interactive multi-media event open to the global public.
