Mission

The mission of the Earth Charter Initiative is to promote the transition to sustainable ways of living and a global society founded on a shared ethical framework that includes respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity, universal human rights, respect for diversity, economic justice, democracy, and a culture of peace.

The Centers strategic priorities

The Center's Strategic Priorities
The priorities of the Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development at UPEACE are:

  • Outreach to educators via education networks.
  • Promotion of formal institutional adoption and implementation of Education for Sustainable Development, with the Earth Charter as primary reference document.
  • Development of courses and materials to be disseminated through education and environment ministries and key strategic partnerships.
  • Coordination and support of a network of organizations and individuals using the Earth Charter as an educational tool.

The Center is an active partner of UNESCO in supporting the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, and the UNESCO Education Sector recently published a book prepared by the Center entitled Good practices using the Earth Charter.
