Earth Charter discussed at the World Council of Churches
As part of its Decade to Overcome Violence process leading up to the International Ecumenical Peace Convocation to be held in Kingston, Jamaica, in May 2011, the World Council of Churches held an international consultation to discuss the relationship between peace and the environment.
The small group of international participants engaged the theme "Peace on Earth is Peace with the Earth". Key topics were the sources of violence against creation, science and technology, the fascination of domination and specific Christian answers to the environmental crisis. Among the participants were Prof. Larry Rasmussen and Dr. Heather Eaton, who both were involved in the Earth Charter drafting process.
The participants formulated a memorandum of key issues that need to find their way into the international Declaration on Just Peace that will be adopted at the Convocation. Among these were the need to apprehend the close interrelatedness between the domination of humans and the domination of the natural world, and to critically assess the complex ideas, actions and structures that govern both of them.
Michael Slaby’s suggestion to draw on the experiences and lessons learnt in the Earth Charter drafting process were taken up by the members of the committee that is responsible for formulating a draft version of the Declaration on Just Peace that will be sent to WCC member churches in the first months of 2009.
