Earth Charter presented at 7th Assembly of the European Christian Environment Network
The seventh ECEN Assembly took place in Milan from 24-28 September 2008. The title of the Assembly was “The True Challenge of Climate Change”. It provided a platform for discussion, exchanging experiences and best practices, and framing theological responses to the massive challenge ahead of us. Michael Slaby participated in a panel discussion on the role of the Churches in Europe in debate on global warming and co-facilitated ECEN’s working group on environmental education.
In the sessions of the working group on education, Slaby distributed draft versions of the Earth Charter Guide on Religion and Climate change that were very well received. The report of the working group holds:
“We are impressed with the potential of the Earth Charter to bring together educators, institutions and individuals from different cultures and sectors of society, who share the same sense of urgency. It can be used as a tool in engaging heart as well as mind, and formulating visions of hope and celebration helping to unleash the immense resources of human imagination, creativity, compassion, love and the power of dignity.
Also vital are hands-on learning experiences which give direct immersion into nature, such as earth literacy programmes in ecological centres, pilgrimages and nature walks, and ecologically focussed retreats. Art, drama, poetry and music are important elements to be included.
Specifically, we propose that ECEN should collaborate with Earth Charter International and further interested partners in hosting a workshop for religious educators in Europe. This workshop would explore the use of the Earth Charter (and related materials) as a tool for helping to incorporate into religious education these response to the challenge of climate change.”
On November 26, a first preparatory meeting to discuss and plan the proposed workshop will be held in London.
