The Italian organization Federazione Nazionale Pro Natura, one of the oldest and most active environmental organizations in Italy, published "Riflessioni sulla Carta della Terra" (Reflections about the Earth Charter). The book is being distributed to more than 5,000 Italian schools. The author, Guiliana del Signore, is an important Italian pedagogist and a member of the executive committee of Pro Natura.

Published by the BRC in November 1997, Buddhist Perspectives on the Earth Charter presents the views of leading scholars of Buddhism on the contribution of Buddhist teachings to an emerging environmental ethic. While the authors write from diverse perspectives -- including Thai, Tibetan, Nichiren, and Zen Buddhism -- they uniformly call for personal transformation, if practitioners are to apply the fundamental Buddhist principles of compassion and interdependence to protect and respect Earth as a living entity.

Women's Views on the Earth Charter contains a collection of essays by women leaders that explores the relationship between the issues that are crucial to women and the principles and values of the Earth Charter. Like the two other BRC books on the Earth Charter, Women's Views addresses a benchmark draft of the Earth Charter. The publication of these three books played a role in the unprecedented global onsultation that led to the final draft of the Charter in year 2000.

Derived from a consultation held in 1997, "Practical Steps to Realize Environmental Justice: Drawing on 50 Years of Human Rights Developments," Human Rights, Environmental Law, and the Earth Charter incorporates the views of environmental lawyers, ethicists, scholars, and activists engaged in the worldwide struggle to enforce human rights initiatives. Complete texts of the Benchmark Draft of the Earth Charter and the Draft International Covenant on Environment and Development are included along with recommendations for revisions that strengthen existing language.

This 15-pg. chapter introduced the Earth Charter and discusses its value as a tool for teaching about sustainable development in the university classroom. The chapter included examples of how some U.S. faculty members have been using the Earth Charter in their courses and provides a selected list of Earth Charter teaching resources.
