See the Earth Charter Benchmark Draft issued at the closing session of the Rio+7 in March 1997, Rio de Janeiro. This draft was built on the 1992 efforts, it collects consultations held in the following years, the Rio+5 deliberations and the dialogue of the Earth Charter Commission. Subsequently it was circulated to obtain comments and contributions.

As a result of consultations between 1997 and 1998, the Draft II was circulated in early 1999 for recommendations and comments.

This document presents a synthesis of the main conclusions and recommendations of the inaugural online (internet) discussion forum of the Earth Charter Education Advisory Committee held between the 26 August and 9 September 2001.

This paper presents a synthesis of the main conclusions and recommendations of the inaugural online (internet) discussion forum of the Earth Charter Education Advisory Committee. The aims of the online forum were to articulate an educational philosophy for the Earth Charter and identify priority tasks for the education programme. The findings summarised in this report reflect the combined wisdom of the participants who represent a diverse array of educators from around the world.

The City of Joondalup is applying the Earth Charter as part of its Strategic Planning process. A comparison between Council policies and the Earth Charter demonstrates significant common ground between the two and the value of the Earth Charter as a tool in local government strategic planning.

This meeting at The Hague involved participants from organizations with significant experience and competence in relevant areas plus many other experts and NGO leaders who, though invited in their individual capacity, were broadly representative of a diverse range of regions, cultures and relgions. The Workshop:
1. Considered the basic elements for an Earth Charter for presentation to the United Nations on the occasion of its 50th anniversary;
2. discussed ways of conducting a worldwide process of consultation leading to an Earth Charter for wide distribution and submission to the United Nations in 1997.

This Handbook has been designed as a source of information for all those who are interested in learning more about the Earth Charter. Information is provided here about those key individuals and organizations that have and continue to support the Earth Charter, the program of activities that comprise the Earth Charter Initiative, and the organizational structure that has been established. A brief summary of the rich history of the Earth Charter is also detailed, providing the necessary context to understand how the Earth Charter relates to the global sustainability agenda. The full text of the Earth Charter has been included as an appendix.

The Earth Charter exhibition titled "Seeds of Change: The Earth Charter and Human Potential," can be downloaded here in PDF format (the file size is 2,211 KB). The exhibition highlights the Earth Charter as a "map" pointing the way toward sustainable living. Japanese, Chinese and Spanish language versions are in the process of being produced. The exhibition was prepared as a joint collaboration between the Earth Charter Initiative and Soka Gakkai International, and is now circulating around the world.

It portrays the need for sustainable development and introduces the positive vision of the Earth Charter along with examples from India, Costa Rica and Kenya of individuals acting to solve local environmental problems such as deforestation and water shortage. It is expected to be shown in many locations and is available (in better quality of resolution) to interested groups in CD form in several different languages upon request. Depending on the budget and space available, the number of panels utilized, the method of printing and the size of each panel can vary.

A call from the leaders and representatives of local governments from across the globe, gathered in Johannesburg, for a new form of global solidarity where all like-minded individuals, organisations and spheres of government rally together to build a new tomorrow.

The 870 tribes of Papua New Guinea affirm their endorsement of the Earth Charter in the Mama Graun Tribal Charter (2002). The Mama Graun Tribal Charter used the Earth Charter as a model, and it adopts the structure of the Earth Charter.

This essay, by Richard Clugston, executive director of the Center for Respect of Life and Environment and Earth Charter USA, talks about the potential of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and the promise of the Earth Charter.

The year 2006 was designated a "transition" year for the Earth Charter Initiative, with the aim of significantly expanding its global presence and impact, and building on the previous five years of formal endorsement and grassroots support. Many aspects of the Initiative were restructured, ranging from the international network to the internet presence. As part of this restructuring, a new office opened in Stockholm (complementing the work of the existing office in Costa Rica) and Alan AtKisson assumed the position of Earth Charter International Transition Director. He chronicled the year on a blog, which has been archived in document below.

This resource is meant to provide general guidelines for education incorporating the Earth Charter, with a clear understanding that its adaptation to local context will be essential. It was designed based on the Earth Charter, as one possible educational tool that can help develop an understanding of the critical choices facing humanity. Our intention is not to impose the Earth Charter as the only instrument, but one that is useful and helpful in the experience of educating for sustainable development.
